{"id":270,"date":"2011-01-25T13:18:30","date_gmt":"2011-01-25T19:18:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.jedge.com\/wordpress\/?p=270"},"modified":"2012-07-05T22:37:50","modified_gmt":"2012-07-06T04:37:50","slug":"earning-cpe-credits-in-a-down-economy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.jedge.com\/wordpress\/2011\/01\/earning-cpe-credits-in-a-down-economy\/","title":{"rendered":"Earning CPE credits in a down economy."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Earning CPE credits in a down economy for you Information Security certifications.<\/p>\n<p>As we enter 2011 the financial talking heads say that our economy is recovering.\u00a0 While this can be debated as vigorously as Vi vs. Emacs you sit in your office with the knowledge that your company\u2019s training budget is still next to nothing.\u00a0 Trips to information security conferences in Las Vegas, Miami, and Orlando are all out of the question.\u00a0 With all of the information security certifications that you have obtained to keep competitive in this tough economy you are required to earn Continuing Professional Education (CPE) credits.\u00a0 Below I will list some simple steps you can take to still keep current on the latest security trends while earning those valuable CPE credits to maintain your certification(s).<br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It\u2019s a virtual world!\u00a0 Virtual worlds like World of Warcraft and Second Life aren\u2019t just for people who waste thousands of hours of their life hiding from the real world.\u00a0 Virtual Conferences exist that allow you to attend presentations, interact with speakers, collaborate with attendees, and visit virtual vendors.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.isaca.org\" target=\"_blank\">ISACA<\/a> offers opportunities to attend <a href=\"http:\/\/www.isaca.org\/Education\/Online-Learning\/Pages\/Virtual-Seminar-and-Tradeshows.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Virtual Conferences<\/a> throughout the year.\u00a0 Look for other organizations to follow this new trend.\u00a0 This can equate to 8-12 CPEs a year depending on the number of conferences offered by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.isaca.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">ISACA<\/a>.\u00a0 You will receive an email confirming your attendance.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>eSymposia (not an electronic Greek drinking party) offer the ability to listen live and interact with speakers on a variety of information security and compliance topics.\u00a0 If you cannot listen live they are all archived to listen at your convenience.\u00a0 However,\u00a0 you don\u2019t have the opportunity to ask your own questions.\u00a0 \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/isaca.brighttalk.com\" target=\"_blank\">ISACA eSymposia<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/isc2.brighttalk.com\" target=\"_blank\">(ISC)<sup>2 <\/sup>eSymposia<\/a> offer new topics each month worth 3 CPE credits each.\u00a0 That is 72 CPE credits a year!\u00a0 You have the ability to take a quiz at the end of the eSymposium to obtain a certificate validating your attendance.\u00a0 NOTE:\u00a0 it is good to start the quiz up while you listen to the speakers.\u00a0 The quiz questions can be tricky and in one instance I had to actually ask the speaker for the answer to the question because they really didn\u2019t touch on it during the presentation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol><\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>Reading is fundamental!\u00a0 Reading an information security book can earn you 5 CPE credits for the year.\u00a0 I suggest picking up a book on Cloud Computing.\u00a0 It\u2019s all the rage!\u00a0 Subscribing to <em>The (ISC)\u00b2 Journal<\/em>, <em>Information Security Magazine<\/em>, or <em>InfoSecurityToday Magazine<\/em> can earn you 5 CPE credits for the year.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0In addition you can earn CPE credits for the magazines published by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.isaca.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">ISACA<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.isc2.org\">(ISC)<sup>2<\/sup><\/a>.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.isaca.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">ISACA<\/a> publishes the <em>ISACA Journal<\/em> bi-monthly.\u00a0 Reading this publication and passing the CPE quiz can earn you 1 CPE credit for a total of 6 for the year.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.isc2.org\/\">(ISC)<sup>2<\/sup><\/a> publishes the <em>Infosecurity Professionals Magazine<\/em> monthly.\u00a0 Reading this publication and passing the CPE quiz will earn you 2 CPE credits for a total of 24 for the year!\u00a0 If you complete all reading you can earn up to 40 CPE credits a year!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol><\/ol>\n<p>Hopefully this information can alleviate any concerns you have with earning enough CPE credits to maintain your information security certification(s).\u00a0 Just don\u2019t let your manager know or you will never get that networking opportunity in Miami \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Earning CPE credits in a down economy for you Information Security certifications.
